Abstract

The LTE system was optimised for high data rates and high quality voice services from the beginning of its development.Since LTE represents an all-IP mobile communication system, i.e. a system that is only concerned with the reception and transmission of packet data from and to the user, traditional circuit switched voice and messaging capabilities are not supported. This research paper describes two possible approaches that enable the use of voice and SMS services in LTE: the utilisation of VoIP techniques and the use of the existing 2G or 3G mobile network infrastructures.Furthermore, an insight on the problems and concerns of their techniques is given.
