Great irrigation — watering Egypt's new desert farmlands

Abstract

Last February, an international consortium led by Kvaerner Construction won the contract to build the largest pumping station on the African continent, providing irrigation for half a million acres of reclaimed farmland in the western Desert of Egypt. World Pumps previews Kvaerner's construction plans for the massive project and samples the wider reaction to this latest step in President Mubarak's controversial and ambitious South Valley Development Project.
