The cathodic reduction of in alkaline electrolyte has been studied by examination of constant current discharge curves, by x‐ray diffraction and by chemical analysis. The reaction has been shown to take place by a three‐step process whereby an amorphous intermediate is formed by assimilation of protons in the lattice. As reduction proceeds the intermediate crystallizes to give nand finally depending on the electrode potential. The rapid increase in electrode resistance at approximately half of the capacity has been related to the formation of interfacial films of .
