The fourth annual Modern Drama Conference was held in conjunction with the Modern Language Association meetings in Washington, D. C. on December 28, 1962. Taking his theme from the topic of the December, 1963, special issue of Modern Drama—American Drama Between "World War I and World War II—Professor Alan S. Downer of Princeton University, chairman of the Conference, introduced two papers: "Sidney Howard and the Social Drama of the Twenties," by Professor Walter J. Meserve of the University of Kansas, and "What Ever Happened to American Comedy?" by Professor Malcolm Goldstein of Queens College.
