Abstract

Latin America has become a central player in the world economy. Its dramatic development over the past two decades has placed it at the forefront of the developing world. This new status for the southern part of the hemisphere constitutes the basis of current economic relations between the United States and Latin America. However, the United States does not have an "economic policy" with respect to Latin America. Rather, its global economic policy seeks to take into account the needs and concerns of Latin America. This paper reviews the impressive scope and depth of Latin American development, and what it means for the United States, describes current policies, and proposes some ideas about possible directions for hemispheric relations, as new changes occur on the status of the region and the global economic environment.
