Radio Resource Management in IEEE 802.16 WiMAX Mesh Networks

Abstract

Radio resource management (RRM) is essential for efficient wireless spectral resource utilization and networking capacity enhancement in the emerging wireless networks. This chapter introduces two RRM frameworks for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.16 Microwave Access (WiMAX) mesh networks. In the first RRM framework, interference-aware RRM techniques are applied to tree topology multihop relay 802.16 networks for efficient resource utilization. The second RRM framework can be applied to mesh topology IEEE 802.16 WiMAX mesh backhaul networks. The mesh base station, which acts as a gateway, is the coordinator of radio resource allocation by scheduling and dispatching data blocks. To increase wireless system performance, managing radio resource efficiently is critical. To effectively utilize wireless radio resources, the route construction scheme exploits the multipath routing opportunities. A cross-layer approach for RRM is applied to avoid multihop route interference through proper route selection and scheduling. The RRM schemes also consider user bandwidth demand for enhanced quality of service.
