Abstract

It is a common enough misconception that the person who holds a freehold estate in land also owns the land itself, but it is a misconception because English land law is based upon the proposition that all land is owned by the Crown, and the occupiers are merely tenants, who hold the land either directly or indirectly from the Crown.
