Photovoltaic Application of Graphene Oxide and Reduced Graphene Oxide

Abstract

The unremitting demand for reliable and sustainable energy has spurred the exploration of different energy sources. Solar energy comes in handy in meeting the demand for a sustainable and clean energy source. Effective conversion of solar energy to electricity requires high-performance solar cells, which calls for the advancement of functional materials. Graphene, characterized by outstanding properties, is suited for application in solar cells. Moreover, derivatives of graphene viz. graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) are compatible with solution-based device processing of organic collar cells (OSCs). This chapter examines the application of GO, rGO and their nanocomposites in polymer solar cells and dye-sensitized solar cells. GO and rGO aid charge transfer and collection efficiency in these solar cells, translating to better device performance. Also, GO and rGO improve the environmental stability of OSCs. A salient aspect of this chapter is the elucidation of the influence of material characteristics and preparation technique/process on the photovoltaic performance of these devices. In this regard, the effects of material characteristics such as GO oxidation and rGO reduction, nanomaterials size and concentration on photovoltaic performance are discussed.
