Abstract

An important emerging application area for Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries is energy storage assets in electric power systems. Li-ion battery service life is heavily dependent on the type of chemistry, temperature, and the application in which it is being used. In an effort to implement a more flexible power system capable of coping with modern grid systems with high renewable energy penetration and distributed generation, utilities are looking at utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) as an important alternative for supporting grid operation and stability. Extensive research has been carried out to analyze the impact of Li-ion batteries in Electric Vehicles. Comparatively, little research has been performed on the modeling and performance of Li-ion batteries for BESS applications. Thus, further studies to establish battery performance and service life estimation for Li-ion batteries in BESS applications are needed. This paper will describe an approach to characterize adequate cycling profiles for Li-ion batteries for BESS applications.
