A Wideband Dual-Polarized Magneto-Electric Dipole Antenna System for Mobile Handsets

Abstract

In this work, a wideband dual-polarized antenna system based on magneto-electric dipoles is proposed, which is excited by two orthogonal Γ-shaped strips. Inductive vias are implemented along the periphery of the ground plane for better impedance matching and gain enhancement. Due to the resonances of the electric dipole and the magnetic dipole, an overlapped operating band from 27.42 GHz to 48.42 GHz is achieved by the two antennas, which covers the n261 and n260 bands for 5G communications. At the same time, a stable radiation pattern is retained, with a high gain of above 6 dBi from 27 GHz to 46 GHz for both polarizations. The antenna element has a compact size of 5 mm × 5 mm × 1.6 mm, making it suitable for implementations in mobile devices.
