Polarization-Insensitive Metasurface based Switchable Absorber/ Rasorber

Abstract

In this paper, a reconfigurable Metasurface has been designed to switch its operation between Absorber and Rasorber. The proposed design consists of two periodic metallic layers where the top resistive layer is separated from the bottom switchable layer by an air spacer. The top resistive layer is responsible for a wide absorption band while switching between absorber and rasorber is done using p-i-n diode (OFF and ON states) mounted symmetrically on the bottom layer. When the p-i-n diode is in ON state the proposed design operates in absorption mode with an absorption band from 7.09 to 22.70 GHz whereas for OFF state it operates as rasorber where it has a transmission window at 5.20 GHz with little shift in the existing absorption band. To exhibit independence towards the polarization of the incident radar signal, metallic pattern and lumped components are symmetrically designed and mounted, respectively. The switching capability of the proposed metasurface between absorber and rasorber makes it the best candidate for radar stealth application by reducing radar cross-section of the potential target and communicating with friendly radar at the same time.
