Ultrathin Polarization Insensitive Terahertz Metamaterial Absorber

Abstract

An ultra-thin, polarization, and oblique incidence angle insensitive terahertz metamaterial absorber is presented here. The unit cell is compact and has a planar structure profile. Near unity absorption is achieved at the resonance frequency along with a good quality factor. The absorption mechanism is analyzed based on the electric field and surface current distribution profiles and retrieved effective medium parameters. The planar ultra-thin absorber structure is consistent with MEMS-based modeling.
