Abstract

Polymers are organic (based on carbon) or inorganic (for example based on silicon). This chapter refers to organic polymers only and to dispersions that are thermoplastic, meaning that they soften and melt when heated, and their use as binders for other particulate matter or modifiers for cement, mortars or concrete. Polymers are large molecules formed by chemical bonding of many simple small molecules called monomers. That process is called polymerisation.
