Active Metasurface With Dynamic Beam Steering in Microwave Region

Abstract

In this paper, an active metasurface for dynamic beam steering is proposed, which are composed of meta-atoms with varactor diodes working in microwave region. The effective refraction index of each single meta-atom can be artificially tuned by the capacitance of diodes, for achieving the arbitrary phase value and unity reflectance. Theoretical analyses and simulation verification are performed to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed active metasurface with full 2π reflectance phase. The proposed active metasurface can work within a broad bandwidth and achieve beam steering with arbitrary angles. This work can be applied to both reflection or transmission metasurface modes, and paves a theoretical foundation for reconfigurable antenna and communication systems.
