Best practice in the management of diabetic foot ulcers and pressure ulcers on the foot

Abstract

Chronic wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers and pressure ulcers on the foot place a significant economic burden on the UK’s healthcare system. However, diabetic foot ulcers and pressure ulcers are also commonly misdiagnosed.This article describes the differences between the presentation, diagnosis and subsequent management of diabetic foot ulcers and pressure ulcers. It discusses the negative effects of suboptimal assessment and diagnosis, and examines the role of podiatry in the management of complications associated with these wound types.The author describes the core principles of treatment, as well as the use of topical oxygen in these complex chronic wounds.
