BOOK-CHAPTER

Ionic Liquid-Based Electrolytes for Supercapacitor Applications

Abstract

This chapter provides a comprehensive review of room temperature ionic liquid electrolytes for supercapacitors, their related performance comparisons, and the electrode–electrolytes interactions. Further, the electrochemical performance of solid-state supercapacitors in the presence of ionic liquid-based electrolytes is discussed. Based on the type of solvent used, gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) can be categorized into aqueous or organic GPEs. However, various types of electrolytes are currently available, but they have not reached their commercial applications because of their low voltage window, part in electrode corrosion, mechanical weakness, leakage, etc. Many microanalytical characterization techniques were used for examining the surface morphology and related physical properties. The thermal stability of the ionic-liquid-based electrolytes used were studied through differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The morphology of the electrode and electrolyte materials were examined using scanning electron microscope.
