Energy-Efficiency Optimization of UAV-Assisted Internet of Things

Abstract

In recent years, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as aerial base stations to assist internet of things (IoT) has attracted wide interest from academia and industries due to UAV's high mobility, flexibility and low cost. To overcome the shortcomings of data backhaul in IoT, a UAV-assisted IoT framework is proposed in this paper. To maintain lifetimes of internet of things devices (IoTDs), the energy-efficiency of UAV-assisted IoT is maximized by jointly optimizing IoTDs' wake-up scheme and the fixed-wing UAV's trajectory. Since the optimization problem of energy-efficiency of UAV-assisted IoT is formulated as a mixed integer non-convex problem, an iterative algorithm is proposed by adopting successive convex approximation techniques. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves a higher energy-efficiency in UAV-assisted IoT compared with the traditional benchmark algorithm.
