Abstract

Uric Acid (UA) is a purine metabolism final product in humans and is considered as an important biomarker for diseases like diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, and gout. Thus, simple and cost-effective uric acid detection is highly desirable. This work focuses on developing an electrochemical biosensor for UA detection based on a screen-printed carbon electrode with immobilized uricase by a glutaraldehyde crosslinking procedure. The presence of immobilized uricase on the surface of the electrode was verified using cyclic voltammetry and the presence of a characteristic peak in the signal at a potential of –0.42 V. Biosensor response was analyzed with different UA concentrations in a range of 0 to 480 µM, the considered limit of detection was 6 µM. The obtained results suggest that the developed biosensor could be a promising alternative for simple and cost-effective UA detection on biological samples.
