Bridging Science and Practice

Abstract

The scientist-practitioner model is the integration of scientific research, training, and practice. Problem-solving in school psychology is the essence of the scientist-practitioner model in action. In this chapter, eight school psychologist scientist-practitioners were interviewed to identify facilitators and barriers in their work applying research to practice and practice to research. These school psychologists are referred to as "hyphens." Hyphens made several actionable recommendations to readers who wish to facilitate evidence-based practices in schools including: Using data to solve problems that matter to consumers, connecting evidence to actions using implementation science and rapidly emerging technological tools, finding effective mentors and cultivating relationships, and honing leadership skills.
