Transponder Placement for Dynamic Lightpath Provisioning in Survivable Translucent Optical Networks

Abstract

In this paper, we study the problem of efficient transponder placement for dynamic lightpath provisioning in survivable and translucent optical networks. For that problem, we propose six different placement strategies, which make use of various data analytics tools applied for historical data related to the location and usage of transponders in the network. Next, we perform extensive numerical experiments to evaluate the efficiency of strategies considered in comparison with reference methods, which do not benefit from the collected historical data. Two comparison criteria are considered, both related to the network throughput. According to the results, the strategies proposed bring superior transponder utilization and in turn - the higher network throughput. In particular, they significantly outperform reference methods allowing to support up to 5.23% more traffic.
