The groundwater resources in Sinai, Egypt

Abstract

The major aquifers identified in Sinai are the Quaternary sands and gravels, Miocene sandstones, Eocene limestone, Middle Cretaceous rock, Lower Cretaceous sandstones, Jurassic sedimentary rocks, Cambrian to Triassic sedimentary rocks and Precambrian crystalline rocks. The mean annual rainfall for Sinai is about 40mm/year, of which it is estimated that 60% is lost to evapo-transpiration, 5% runoff to the sea, and 35% percolates deep into the rocks and unconsolidated deposits, much of the deep percolation constitutes groundwater recharge.
