This paper presents a very-high-voltage-gain DC-DC converter based on a so-called resonant inductive boost technique. In addition to the turn's ratio n of the transformer, the adopted resonant inductive-boosting technique leverages on the resonance of the inductance (leakage and mutual inductances) of the air core (loosely coupled) transformer used in the converter to achieve a very high voltage gain (>n times). Moreover, the inductive nature of the transformer's current allows the natural occurrence of ZVS operation of this single-switch converter. The operating principles and design considerations are discussed. A prototype based on this design is built for verification. Experimental results validated the key features of the converter in concurrently achieving a very high voltage gain (87.9 times the input voltage), ZVS operation, low voltage stress, and continuous input current.
