Intra Mode Decision Acceleration for HEVC Screen Content Coding

Abstract

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is the latest video coding standard, it employs complicated techniques to achieve high compression ratio. A new extension for the HEVC was released to target screen content video due to their special nature. Screen content sequences are limited in colors besides they have sharp edges and complex structure. The new incorporated tools for screen content coding increase the encoding time which affects the practical implementation of the encoder. In this paper, a new fast scheme is proposed for fast screen-content encoder by skipping unnecessary mode testing. The algorithm is simulated using HEVC screen content software tool HEVC-16.7+SCM 6. It saves 26.24% of the encoding time with only 1.15% increase in the BD-Rate.
