Wireless sensor network is a network of devices which are connected via sensor nodes that are mostly deployed in unaspirated location. Sensor nodes are self-deployable and organize themselves which sense the location and collects the information from the sensor node to base station. For such data gathering purpose several routing protocols are designed for easy way to communicate. The communication from source node to sink node is managed by number of routing protocols. The performance of sensor nodes merely depends on routing protocols. For such reason a survey based on routing protocols are carried out. There are number of routing protocols exists based on the network structure. Various cluster based routing protocols are examined and compared with different metrics for better performance. Furthermore, this paper deals with clustering methodology, rotation of cluster heads, optimization techniques and several clustering routing algorithms to prevent the loads that makes the sensor nodes overburden in the network. It is concluded that this paper will be with some way for future research field on clustering based routing protocols.
