STRES PADA ORANG TUA YANG MEMILIKI ANAK DENGAN RETARDASI MENTAL

Abstract

Background: Mental retardation is characterized by low intellectual function accompanied by the inability of adaptation function.These conditions will affect the child's ability to adapt with the environment, such as in learning, playing, working, and socializing which can become a sourch of stress for parents.Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe the stres in parents of children with mental retardation Method: This study is a quantitative research with observational survey design.Sample is 122 parents of children with mental retardation that goes to disable school in Bandar Lampung.Perceivd Stress Scale (PSS) is used to assess stress.Results: Result shows that most of the parents have low level of stress (93,4%), followed with moderate level of stress (4,9%), and the least was high level of stress (1,6%).Conclusion: Nurturing children with mental retardation is not easy for parent.Although low level of stress in parents found in this study, parents of children with mental retardation still need support from social environment to give right parenting for their children.
