An Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Inspired Passive Wireless Sensor for Crack Monitoring

Abstract

A passive wireless antenna sensor in ultra-high frequency (UHF) band is proposed for structural health monitoring (SHM). In conjunction with embedding two U-shaped strips to induce a dark mode, we utilize a rectangular dielectric resonator antenna to generate a bright mode. Such a configuration forms a narrow-band electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) like effect for separating sensing from communication. The detectability of surface crack using the proposed antenna sensor is demonstrated.
