Success of the educational institution, including pesantren , lies in its leadership. Kiai as the head of the pesantren,has an important role in achieving the goals of the pesantren. One of the effective kiai's leadership styles in pesantren is transformational leadership style. This leadership style was able to bring change to the pesantren institutions supported by organizational culture. Therefore, transformational leadership style is applied by KH. Muhyiddin Abdusshomad in the Nurul Islam Antirogo pesantren was very effective in building pesantren’s culture and shaping the civitas’ behaviour of the pesantren. This study aims to identify and analyse the kiai’s transformational leadership style when building a pesantren culture. To identify the kiai’s leadership style, the researchers use the Bass & Riggio view of four transformational leadership factors, i.e: Idealized influence, Inspirational motivation, Intellectual motivation, and Individual consideration. This study found that KH. Muhyiddin Abdusshomad built the pesantren culture by taking from the doctrine of Islam. The effectiveness of the kiai’s leadership is also inseparable from the normative doctrine of Islam, so that the kiai’s transformational leadership style is based on Islamic values.
