Abstract

Communication technologies have greatly influenced the daily lives of people. Now it is normal to use technology to simplify daily tasks; among them, a clear example is the use of electronic money as a means of payment. In Ecuador, this means of payment has an interesting history from its implementation to its complete abandonment. It should be noted that, since the 21st century, Ecuador adopted the US dollar as its official currency, and was an instrument that stabilized the local economy. It is then that in 2014 the electronic payment mechanism was implemented, controlled by the Central Bank of Ecuador, guaranteeing the issue at 100%. This means of payment only lasted for 4 years, therefore, it is necessary to analyze the most influential factors during its implementation, application mechanism, socioeconomic impact and because this electronic medium did not manage to consolidate during the apogee of the digital age.
