Reliability Modeling and Analysis for Cyber Physical Systems

Abstract

Reliability is a crucial metric in designing Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) because a failure in these systems would result in financial loss, property damage, and even loss of human life. In this paper, we present a general framework of reliability modeling for our ongoing work on Cyber Physical Systems. The target CPS architecture consists of a computation and control unit, a communication network, and physical elements such as sensors and actuators. While modelling the system reliability at high-level (because the characteristics and importance of individual components may vary due to specific nature of the system), we study the parameters that affect the reliability of individual components. In addition, we illustrate the proposed reliability model in an experimental setup using various reliability values given in a technology library.
