Abstract

In the past two decades, social cognitive career theory (SCCT) has received considerable attention from researchers and practitioners because of its sound theoretical foundation, robust empirical evidence, and versatile practical utilities. SCCT consists of several interlocking models that include person input, person-cognitive, and contextual variables for predicting interest development, career choice and action, performance and persistence, and educational and work satisfaction. This chapter provides an overview of SCCT by highlighting key variables and hypotheses as well as evidence for its cross-cultural validity. Case scenarios, experiential exercises, and reflection questions are also presented for training and teaching in SCCT research and interventions.
