In this paper, a metamaterial inspired resonator is employed to create a planar compact dual band microstrip patch antenna. The design is investigated by making use of a single loop of meandered rectangular complementary split ring resonator (CSRR), which is etched in the ground plane of a conventional patch antenna, resulting in dual band behavior. The antenna is conceived on a Rogers Duroid 4350B substrate, which has relative permittivity of 3.66 and loss tangent 0.004. The patch antenna is designed to resonate at 5.65 GHz, whereas etching the proposed CSRRs in the ground plane creates another resonance at 3.65 GHz. Proposed design can be used for the Wireless local area network (WLAN) and Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave access (WiMAX) applications. The designed antenna has a compact size of 22 × 27 × 1.524 mm 3 .
