Novel approach by remote scanner laser welding on lap weld strength comparison of different weld shapes and weld seam gap bridging using wobbling features for T-joint and Butt joint

Abstract

Currently the automotive industry is facing a challenge in improving the body stiffness, reducing weight and reducing the vibrations for occupants inside the vehicle. In order to achieve this in body in white vehicles welding process should have least heat input on the body. Laser welding process provides the least heat input on the body. Parts fit up are very critical for laser welding process, if there is a gap in the parts fit up laser welding will not be possible. This paper reviews the transverse tensile strength of different weld shapes on lap welding process with remote scanner welding and also demonstrates using the remote scanner wobbling feature, bridge the weld seam gap for T- and Butt Joints. In this study, Galvanized Steel and Aluminium sheets were welded with TruDisk laser delivered through a PFO 3D scanner. Further we discuss the best weld shape for weld strength and the maximum gap in the parts fit up that can be laser welded.
