Orthopedic X-ray Image Enhancement Based on Wavelet Transform and Histogram Matching

Abstract

X-ray images are widely used for detecting defects of bone in medical applications. The images are corrupted by noise during the acquisition process which causes loss of visibility to detect the bone features. This paper depicts a way to improve the view of an image where image enhancement techniques play an important role. Here, an X-ray image enhancement model based on discrete wavelet transform and histogram matching technique is proposed under the assumption that enhancement of high frequency component of an image increases it's sharpness. Therefore, vertical detail of Haar wavelet transform is considered here. Finally, histogram specification technique is used to increase the visibility of the images. Experimental results show that the algorithm can effectively enhance the medical X-ray images.
