Modern power systems nowadays are being operated at stability limitations. Transient (in)stability phenomenon in power system is an important area where system security must be ensured. In this paper, the problem is formulated as security constrained optimal power flow (SCOPF) and a new methodology has been proposed using evolutionary algorithm, Biogeography Based Optimisation (BBO) to solve it. BBO searches for global minima through two processes, migration and mutation of living species scattered over topography and has shown encouraging results in literature. Economic dispatch (ED) is the objective function for optimal power flow and BBO searches for global minimum of cost of generation subjected to fault like conditions. For transient stability assessment, Single Machine Equivalent (SIME) method has been used to avoid over stabilisation of the system. Tests conducted on 3 machine, 39 bus system using MATLAB establish efficacy of the proposed approach.
