Abstract

We present a novel 12 mm × 12 mm dual-band implantable patch antenna with resonances at 2.4 GHz and 4.8 GHz. The antenna exhibits a simulated maximum realized gain of -26.5 dB and -13.5 dB at these frequencies, respectively. Concurrently, it is coated with a thin polymer layer to ensure biocompatibility. In this paper, we present the antenna design and Finite Element (FE) simulations of its reflection coefficient, realized gain, and Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) performance. Overall, the proposed design brings forward transformational possibilities for wireless implants that utilize mixing technologies to backscatter in the second harmonic of the received signal, among others.
