Abstract

Alicia Giménez Bartlett's latest novel (Hombres desnudos, 2015), winner of the planeta 2015 prize, is characterised not only by its vivid representation of the ideological and economic crisis of the contemporary society and by its extremely realistic plot, but also for the language that the author chooses for her characters. Their voices compose a rich mosaic, which is worth studying linguistically. This paper presents a quali-quantitative analysis of a specific linguistic element of the text, i.e., the colloquial phraseological units, by looking at the translation equivalents adopted in the Italian translation of the text, carried out by Maria Nicola (Uomini nudi, 2016). Transmitting all the nuances of these phraseological units is a complex task, which results in a number of translation challenges (Nord 1991). Thus, the hypothesis guiding the study is that the translated text loses many colloquial phraseological units and that the vulgar language used by the characters of the novel suffers from lexical and phraseological neutralisation. From a methodological point of view, after gathering and classifying the phraseological corpus of the text (which comprises more than a thousand phraseological units) following Corpas Pastor (1996), García Page (2008) and Briz (2000, 2010), the analysis focuses on translation techniques as well as the equivalence obtained (Zuluaga 1998, Roberts 1998, Baker 1992, Delabastita 1996, Corpas Pastor 2003, Marco 2009, Mira Alvarez 2011) in the Italian translation. The results point to an interesting linguistic and cultural comparison and allow the consideration of a number of pragmatic factors relevant to translate colloquial language (Alessandro, 2008).
