This paper shows the use of topology optimization for finding an optimized form for civil engineering structures. Today topology optimization and shape optimization have been integrated in several commercial finite element codes. Here, the topology of two complex civil engineering structures will be optimized using the commercial code Abaqus CAE. The structures are: a bucket foundation for an off-shore submarine structure for a wind turbine, and a pedestrian footbridge over a freeway. The topology optimization method used is the SIMP method, based on minimizing the structures' compliance. Complex load patterns and dynamic loading lead to implantation of constraints of the optimization. These constraints will influence and change the final topology.
