ABSTRACT A compact circularly polarized (CP) antenna with fractal‐geometry characteristics for dual‐band applications is proposed in this paper. The antenna is fabricated on a 41 mm × 41 mm × 1.6 mm FR4 substrate with 10‐dB impedance bandwidth of 2.19–3.7 GHz and 3‐dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 2.3 − 2.5 and 3.39–3.55 GHz. The antenna is designed based on fractal theory and the working mechanism is investigated. Due to its unique slot structure, left hand circular polarization radiation is achieved at the upper hemisphere. Simulated results and measured results are given and analyzed in detail. The dual‐band CP performance demonstrates that the proposed antenna is well suited for the WLAN/WiMAX wireless applications. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 59:451–456, 2017
