Supermassive black hole in M87

Abstract

For two decades, astronomers have hunted for definitive proof of the existence of supermassive black holes in the centres of galaxies. Now, observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), led by Holland Ford of Johns Hopkins University, have prosecuted the case of the galaxy M87 in a manner that would at least satisfy the civil if not criminal courts.
