Zea mays L. "maíz morado" (Poaceae), un cereal utilizado como alimento en el Perú prehispánico

Abstract

Resumen Se describe e ilustra en detalle a Zea mays L. “maiz morado” (Poaceae), un fruto utilizado como alimento en el Peru prehispanico.  Z. mays habita en las vertientes occidentales del Peru alrededor de 8°00’28,8” S, 78°41’18,5” O y 1390 de elevacion. Se indaga sobre su conocimiento popular en la poblacion norcostena peruana (departamento La Libertad), quienes la utilizan como alimento desde epocas prehispanicas. Asimismo, se identifican y describen representaciones del mencionado cereal en la coleccion de ceramica prehispanica que custodia el Museo de Historia Natural y Cultural de la Universidad Privada Antenor Orrego de Trujillo, Peru, con el fin de establecer las evidencias que demuestren que fue utilizada por los pobladores en estos territorios antes de la llegada de los espanoles. Palabras clave: Zea mays , Poaceae, cereal, Peru prehispanico. Abstract Zea mays L. “purple corn” (Poaceae), a fruit used for feeding in Ancient Peru, is described and illustrated in detail. Z. mays is found in the western slopes of Peru at 8°00’28.8” S, 78°41’18.5” W and 1390 m above sea level. We were interested in the common knowledge of “purple corn” in the population of the North Coast of Peru (La Libertad Region), who use it as food since pre-Columbian times. Representations of this cereal were identified and described in the collection of pre-Columbian pottery owned by the Museum of Natural and Cultural History of the Antenor Orrego University, Trujillo, Peru, in order to establish evidences that demonstrate its use by the inhabitants of Ancient Peru.
