Abstract

This book describes ways of relating to the relatives of patients with serious illnesses, particularly cancers. Although primarily written for doctors it could be of benefit to nurses. The book stresses the importance of tailoring what is said, how it is said and when, to the needs of individuals. Strategies for achieving this and pitfalls to avoid are discussed. The book emphasises that a range of approaches exist and a standard procedure should not be prescribed for dealing with all relatives.
