Abstract

This chapter describes the main concepts behind inter-vehicle communication technology, and presents some of the most promising standards, applications and projects. It considers the models used in vehicle-to-vehicle data communication. The chapter analyzes current and emerging applications of interests. It also presents a survey of existing testbeds and projects, as well as thematic and joint actions and networks. The chapter utilizes the notation that provides case-by-case the best clarity in the context. It identifies three main systems for vehicular communication: vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure, and vehicle-to-vehicle-to-infrastructure. Advances in "on vehicle" electronics, computing, communications, and sensing have significantly increased the interest for innovative applications being able to exploit the unique potential, and relative low operational cost, of vehicular communication networks to increase traffic safety. The vehicular scenario is characterized by specific properties, at the routing level, that make them suboptimal for multihop communication in an Inter-vehicle communication system.
