Abstract This chapter reviews basic concepts and principles that serve as the foundation for pediatric palliative care. The chapter describes pediatric hospice, palliative care, and the importance of concurrent disease−focused and comfort-focused care for children with serious illness. Understanding concepts such as developmental stages and children’s perceptions of death is important in planning care. Whole-child care includes family-centered care and addressing physical and psychological symptoms as well as spiritual and cultural concerns. Special consideration is given to planning care that is needed at the time of death of a child and the support needed by families. This chapter applies key concepts of palliative care as well as unique aspects in caring for children.
