BOOK-CHAPTER

Family Caregivers of Stroke Survivors

Abstract

Abstract Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability in the United States and many stroke survivors subsequently experience impairments necessitating daily care from family members. Family caregivers often experience burden and distress, and certain characteristics put them at risk for depression and poor health. This chapter provides an overview of the issues and problems encountered by many caregivers of stroke survivors as well as some of their unique needs and challenges. Studies of caregiver interventions are reviewed, and the implementation and effectiveness of programs are evaluated. Brief case studies are also included to illustrate elements of evidence-based practice in family caregiving for stroke survivors.
