Abstract

The risk assessment process in general provides a way to develop, organize and present scientific information so that it is relevant to environmental decisions in the watershed. Floods have the potential to cause fatalities, displacement of people and damage to the environment. Flood risk means the combination of the probability of a flood event and of the potential adverse consequences for human health and the environment associated with a flood event. Flood risk assessment evaluates these potential adverse impacts that floods have on humans, the environment, cultural heritage and economic activity. The paper deals with flood risk assessment in general and in the Hornad and Bodrog river basin which is located in the eastern part of Slovak republic.
