Theory focused practice: enhancing student learning in children’s nursing practice

Abstract

Nursing education aims to develop nurses to be fi t for practice, purpose and award (UKCC 1999). Fitness for practice and purpose are determined by the outcomes from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Fitness for award indicates the academic level students are expected to achieve, such as diploma or degree. As nurse educators we are often faced with the challenge of devising innovative programmes to achieve these aims. We must produce knowledgeable practitioners with the critical thinking skills required to underpin practice. These skills must be fostered during training with an emphasis on lifelong learning, thus producing a competent practitioner capable of delivering quality care on qualifying and beyond.
