A simple and compact broadband circularly polarized antenna has been designed, fabricated, and characterized. This antenna consists of a circular slot etched in the ground plane on one side of the substrate, and a semicircular patch with a microstrip feedline on the other side. The total substrate size is 38 × 38 × 1.52 mm3. The measured −10 dB impedance bandwidth is 116.6% (2.37–9 GHz) and the measured 3 dB axial-ratio bandwidth is 58.7% (3.22–5.9 GHz), covering the 3.5 GHz WiMAX band and the 5.2/5.8 GHz WLAN bands. The measured peak gain is 6.18 dBic at 5.8 GHz. This antenna is suitable for multiservice wireless systems covering both WiMAX and WLAN. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
