The capacity of the cathode material is closely correlated with the energy density of a Li-ion battery. In the last few years, high-capacity, lithium-rich layered oxides and novel polyanion compounds have attracted much attention as cathode materials for the next-generation of Li-ion batteries. In this paper, we review the latest developments in these areas, from our group and others. We focus on the structures and physicochemical (especially electrochemical) properties of these cathode materials, and in-situ spectroscopic studies of the mechanisms of electrochemical reactions. The composition-structure-performance relationships of these materials are summarized and analyzed.
