Shave-joining process for dissimilar materials.

Year: 1989 Journal:   Journal of the Japan Society for Composite Materials Vol: 15 (1)Pages: 29-34

Abstract

A new joining method is developed to realize readily the strong joints between two different materials and hence to produce the sophisticated parts made of high performance materials and/or ordinary ones. The process simply consists of press shaving of a locally heated hole within the main material at a sharp corner of another material followed by a cooling of such joined parts of the two elements. Such materials as aluminum, aluminum alloy, low carbon steel, medium carbon steel, super hard steel, alumina, silicon nitride, fiber reinforced plastics and some thermoplastics are examined to produce the shave-joints between two dissimilar materials. The factors of the joint strength, the position in various types of joining, the characteristics and the possible joint modes are essentially discussed for the process.
