Traduciendo entre ‘periferias’: Hendrik Conscience en las literaturas del País Vasco

ResumenResumenKarmelo Etxegarai tradujo al euskera un cuento del escritor flamenco Hendrik Conscience a finales del siglo XIX, cuando la literatura vasca estaba en proceso de construcción. La traducción desempeñó una doble función. Por un lado, ayudó a generar un nuevo repertorio literario, siendo la producción literaria en prosa en euskera todavía muy escasa, y por otro lado, contribuyó a construir una identidad vasca. Según se demuestra en el presente análisis histórico–descriptivo y funcional, la estrategia de la traducción al euskera de Conscience fue muy diferente a la estrategia que marcó la traducción al castellano del mismo autor en la misma época en el País Vasco, y también muy diferente a la estrategia que se utilizó en la traducción francesa, a pesar de que Etxegarai se basó en esta última para traducir al escritor flamenco. De hecho, el intercambio entre ambas literaturas ‘periféricas’ pasó por París.AbstractKarmelo Etxegarai translated into Basque a short story by the Flemish writer Hendrik Conscience at the end of the nineteenth century, when Basque literature was in the process of construction. The translation fulfilled a double function. On the one hand, it contributed to the development of a new literary repertoire at a time when Basque literary production in prose was still very limited; and on the other hand it contributed to the construction of a Basque identity. As is shown by this historical–descriptive and functional analysis, the Basque translation strategy of Conscience was very different from the strategy used for Spanish translation by the same author at the same period in the Basque Country, and also very different from the strategy used for French translation, although Etxegarai used the latter for his translation of the Flemish author. In fact, the exchange between both ‘peripheral’ literatures passed through Paris.
